The rating system you see for each job listing is our way of indicating how well this particular job meets our standards in terms of being a job for the 80%.
We give a star for each of the following:
- Is this a paid post? If it has been paid for then the posting company has fully accepted and embraces what we are trying to do. Adding a star for this, as well as a green checkmark, helps a paid post to stand out.
- Is the company accepting self-taught developers for the position? A lot of developers are self taught. If you think about it, we all are. Some of us have worked to obtain certifications or higher education, but in reality, these should not replace real world experience or a person's drive to become proficient in their own way.
- Has a salary been provided? A posting will get a star for providing salary information. We feel that salary is important, and companies that are not transparent about this have not really thought through the process of who they want to hire for the position that they are describing.
- Is it a remote or hybrid position? Postings get a star for the position being remote or hybrid. The world has changed, and even though some positions have necessary in-office or in-factory requirements, these can probably all still be managed as hybrid.
- Is the position full-time (permanent or contract)?
Not everyone will agree with the rating but we think that a rating makes it simpler for people to identify solid potential positions and we will of course change and iterate as we learn more.
