General
The underlying concept for this site was formulated at an IT Tech gathering in Edmonton during early April, 2023. The discussion at the time was about how to encourage people to migrate to Alberta, and at a more macro level, how to encourage companies to establish operations in Alberta.
The war in Ukraine was seeing ten's of thousands immigrating to Canada in the search for a peaceful and safe life, and these people were finding it difficult to find positions, let alone get any interviews.
Unfortunately, what we were experiencing and seeing in concrete terms, were highly detailed and specific job descriptions. Alberta, and Edmonton, had just lost Deep Mind and the discussion in my opinion was quickly going to a place where I had some concerns. In my opinion, there were too many companies advertising for positions that simply could not be filled based on their education and experience requirements. There were too many positions wanting masters level education and PHD's.
My thoughts immediately went to the underdog. The new immigrant, the person just out of school, the person who was spending time and money re-skilling and learning new things. Where did these people fit here in terms of finding employers willing to pick them up, and develop them in their own way?
And, to be honest, the crunch of it was that the job vacancies being promoted by various levels of government were absolutely unfounded rubbish. There were way fewer positions, on an order of magnitude, than the statistics were indicating.
So, IT Job Bandit was born from that broader conversation. It is intended to be a simple listing of job postings that can be scanned each day, and supported by a simple daily newsletter of jobs. If you see something you like, you click on it and are taken to the actual companies posting, on their own page.
This last point is also of particular interest. There are no real consolidators of job postings. This means that someone looking for a tech job has to resort to boutique postings on recruiter sites, sites like Monster, Glassdoor and Indeed. The fact is, a lot of companies, especially the big ones, do not post positions on these sites.
If you are a job seeker, you are spending hours each day going through your own list of companies, trying to find the positions that they are advertising for.
Hopefully, IT Job Bandit begins to solve that problem. We curate each position, check it out, have a conversation with the poster, and do the work to build excellence in the quality of the positions that you will find on our list.
Our vision is to learn and understand the problems that tech job seekers face and to continually iterate this site (slowly as it may be) to become a powerful tool, based in Alberta, for the 80% of us.
